Easy Halloween Costume Ideas Round Up

I love sites that feature easy ways to create entertaining Halloween costumes that don't require a huge investment of time or money. Here's a list of places you can find some good ideas (and a couple of my own ideas for ya):

1. I suggest going as The Fashion Police- you can dress up as a police officer (or just a well dressed person) and carry- and issue- Fashion Citations:

Handbag of the Day: Leather Tote

It's a roomy leather bag that will function well for those of you who need to carry your lives on your shoulders every day. It comes in 3 color combos, but I think I like this tan/black one best, as it looks the most versatile. And yes, that weird charm/keychain/thingy is removable.

Handbag of the Day: Colorblock Satchel

This is the Sloan & Alex Shea Colorblock Satchel. It's $178 at Nordstrom. Unless you live in a cave, you know the handbag world is all about the satchel right now. And color blocking is huge, too. So you can participate in these trends with one sweet ~~little~~ meduim-sized handbag. This bag will work well with fall colors- complimenting the more traditional darker hues and contrasting with the brights that are trending right now. It's a great every day size, and the long strap and shorter handle options give versatility. It comes in 3 color combos, but this one, described as "Ink/Violet/Forest", is my favorite.

What's the Diff? Gold Knot Earrings Edition

These are the Know The Ropes Knot Studs. They are $48 from Kate Spade.

These are the Believe It or Knot Earrings. They are $9.99 at ModCloth.

Gold knot earrings are a classic piece of jewelry with a little nautical touch. There are real gold versions that are $200+; I stuck with some lower priced options here.

What's the diff? Well, the Kates are more tightly wrapped knots, 14k gold plated, and 3/8 inch long. The ModCloth versions are more loosely wrapped knots, lead and nickel-free metal, and 1/2 inch long. Frankly, I think you could probably get away with the ModCloth version if you took decent care of them. Ultimately though, they won't last as long as something in real gold, or even gold plate.

Which would I choose? It's a trick question of course, because my ears aren't pierced . But if they were, I'd probably good with the cheaper pair; my style doesn't tend toward the preppy or classic, so these would be a fun addition but not something I'd wear often.

Tights Storage

I have received a request to discuss the best way to store tights. I also happen to be in the market for better storage myself.

If yours are in a jumbled mess in a drawer somewhere, please stop it. It's just mean to your tights and it must take you forever to find what you need. AND there are so many easy and inexpensive ways to organize that crazy mess.

I think your best option will come down to two things: 1) whether you have more available drawer space or closet space; and 2) how aesthetically pleasing you want your storage solution to be.

Here is pretty much what I currently do:

I have one pair per baggie in a drawer. Each baggie is labeled with a general description of what is inside, and each baggie is closed. The labeling helps when trying to distinguish among black, navy, and dark grey when the sun is barely out. Keeping the baggies closed prevents the pairs from falling out.

Upsides: protection from snags, separated from other pairs, easy to find and grab what I need

Downsides: baggies do not stay put (they slide around and quickly become a jumbled mess inside the drawer), not aesthetically pleasing, extra steps to put them away (if I don't fold, roll and put each pair back into its baggie immediately after washing, I end up with a jumbled mess anyway), storage in sealed plastic may not be best for tights in the long run

Here are 6 more options to consider:

1. Tights on hangers (idea found here)

Upsides: attractive (especially if you have a range of colors), save drawer space, easy to find what you need in the same place as the rest of your outfit, tights can breathe

Downsides: extra steps to put them away (you will have to put them away immediately or end up with a mess on your bed/dresser/floor/dusty treadmill), takes up hanging space, may not be as attractive with 15 pairs of black and grey tights

If you want to do this, here's some good advice from a Vogue Australia commenter on how properly fold tights on a hanger (similar to scarves): "Fold the tights in half over the hanger (not so there is one leg on each half but lengthways). You will have the waistband of the stockings and both feet hanging over one side, and the other side will be a loop. Pull the stocking feet and waistband through the loop. Pull gently on the feet/waistband and voila you should have them hanging in a nice knot."

2. Tights in organizer cubes (found here)

Upsides: can easily see what you have, could be stored in a drawer or on a shelf in a closet or wardrobe, could find some that match your decor, fast and easy to put away each pair in each section

Downsides: could snag tights if material is rough, takes up drawer or shelf space, may not be attractive, limited by the number of available cubbies

3. Tights in drawer dividers

Upsides: can easily see what you have, frees up closet space, fast and easy to put away each pair in each section

Downsides: takes up drawer space, could snag tights if material is rough, limited by the number of available cubbies (though they are often customizable)

4. Tights in a hanging shoe rack

This one is attractive, and is meant for over a door, but they also come in clear plastic can can hang from the bar in your closet.

Upsides: save closet and drawer space, easy access to each pair, protection from snags, could find attractive option, easy to put away

Downsides: may not be able to easily see what you have, most options aren't that pretty, may have to put holes in or scratches on a door, limited by the number of available sections

5. Tights on scarf hangers

This one is from Ikea:

Upsides: save drawer space, can easily see what you have, easy to put away

Downsides: risk of snagging when pulling through loops, takes up closet space, looks slightly old lady-ish

6. Tights in plastic drawer organizer (found here)

Upsides: can easily see what you have, could be stored in a drawer or on a shelf in a closet or wardrobe, could find some that match your decor, fast and easy to put away each pair in each section, protection from snags, more options with different sized cubbies

Downsides: limited by the number of available cubbies, plastic looks a little cheap

This one is the clear winner for me. It has the right number of cubby sections for the pairs I have, I can put it in a drawer or in my closet, it's easy to put each pair away quickly, each pair can breathe, and I can easily see what I have. I may even put small labels on some sections to help distinguish between black and navy in the morning.

Review of Commando Tights

A.K.A Tights From Heaven.

The quest to find tights that are truly opaque (not a hint of sheerness!) and truly matte (not even a bit of shine!) has been a long one.

I have conducted much research in this area, both by trying many pairs and by reading up on what others like best. Many crowd favorites have fallen short: DKNY, while usually comfortable and fairly matte, often have a waist band that digs in and aren't truly opaque; Wolford tights might be the cat's meow, but they are also $60+ and some are wool; Banana Republic doesn't fit me well, nor do Merona tights from Target.

Thanks to my faithful reading of Lucky Magazine, I discovered Commando Opaque Matte Tights.

They are truly matte, truly opaque, and best of all, there is no waist band to dig into my skin. They sit very high on the waist and the stretchy swathe of material that rests on my stomach and hips doesn't dig in- it just...holds them up. So they are seamless and comfortable and stylish and warm. And they are $34, which I agree is hefty, but so worth it. My price per wear on these babies will be miniscule by the time Spring rolls back around.

I love them so much, I bought 6 pairs: 2 black, 2 brown, 1 purple, and 1 red and black stripe.

It's time for my Annual Tights Clean Out And Organization.

Every September, I go through all of my tights and try all of them on. Yep, all of them. I make sure they are still:
1. Comfortable- not too tight or too loose, not scratchy, no irriating seams
2. Attractive- no holes or runs, no pilling, not worn out, still up to date colors and opaqueness or sheerness
Here is what I discovered this year: I forgot do this last September.

I can hardly be blamed, I was planning a WEDDING for pete's sake. But it means my job this year has been a difficult one.

Total pairs I started with: 38

Pairs I am returning because they are still in their packaging: 4

Pairs I am giving away because they are unworn but unreturnable and it turns out I am not a sparkly tights kind of girl: 1

eBay Resellers & eBay Buyers: Are You Freaking Kidding Me?!

I am going on record as saying I do not support the crap that people pulled with the Missoni for Target collection yesterday. Buying insane amounts of stuff in order to resell it is not ok.

The number of Target shoppers who are now reselling the merch on eBay- for jaw-droppingly astronomical prices- should be ashamed of their shady and dishonest behavior.

The whole (style) purpose of Target's designer collaborations is to make creative and interesting design available to everyone. When someone buys a $39.99 blanket at Target for the sole purpose of re-selling at a Buy It Now price of $275 (I kid you not, that is what is happening), they are undermining the ability of people to access stylish pieces at affordable prices. They are putting these items out of reach of the very people they were designed for (i.e., pretty much everyone).

You know what else is inaccessible to most people? High end designer clothing. So now the cheaper versions at Target are being made as unreachable as the real deal.

You know how much a real Missoni scarf costs?

This one costs $245:

If you are a brand whore (and I am the last person to fault you for it), your lust for all things Missoni is understandable. It's Italian, it's colorful, it's iconic. But why would you buy the Target version on eBay when you can spend the same amount- or in some cases, less- on the real thing?

The fact that in many cases eBay resellers are charging the same prices as Nordstrom is just sickening.

But you know what? They wouldn't do it if it didn't work. Clearly, enough people are making money on this shady BS to make it worthwhile. If eBay buyers would stop buying it, there would be no demand.

If you don't walk away from the over-priced merch and the related hysteria, this will continue. So I do not support the people buying this stuff on eBay, either. I don't give a damn about Target's profit margins. But I do believe in style at all price levels and the ability of people to take part in good design regardless of their budget.

My Missoni for Target Experience- And My Haul

Missoni, people. MISSONI.

I have never been as impressed with a designer collaboration as this one. Target, WalMart, KMart- everybody's doing it now, and with pretty mixed results as far as genuine quality, value, and aesthetics go. Only Felix Rey for Target came close for me, and that was a very limited collection of handbags.

To everyone who did not arrive before the store opened or did not have their fingers on the trigger button at 12:01 when the online stuff showed: snooze = lose. The media attention alone was enough to tip everyone off that this would be wildly popular. But the widely-publicized stories about the NYC Pop Up store selling out in 30 minutes should have been another giant clue. I will say that the website being overloaded for hours is total BS; only Target can be blamed for this obvious lack of planning.

7:55 am: The line at the Emeryville store was at least 50 people deep when I arrived for the 8:00 am store opening. Was later told people got there as early as 7:00 am to get in line. I rejected a cart, knowing it would just slow me down (and I have a tendency to use them as battering rams).

To everyone who doubted I'd need to get there early: HA HA.

The reality was that you couldn't be in two places at once; the collection was scattered around the store. Unless you shopped with teammates, you had to prioritize.

Knowing this would be the case, and having reviewed all of the pieces online last week, my strategy was to beeline straight for the shoes. I would grab my size in both pairs I wanted, and get out of the way for the rest of the salivating masses.

7:59 am: I shot past the shrieking women snatching sweaters and dresses, picked up both pairs and got out of the damn way. I tried them on a few rows away from the melee (people, I am not exaggerating- this was like a somewhat more civilized version of the Black Friday rush), and they fit perfectly. Success!

Then I could wander the store, relaxed, and take in the rest of the scene.

Women were grabbing stuff indiscriminately from racks and shelves. Carts were piled high with clothes and luggage and bedding. There were women asking others if they'd trade sizes with them, and a few groups- clearly bound for eBay- dividing their spoils like pirates at the end of a fruitful village pillaging.

The store was cleaned out in 10 minutes flat.

There were some who looked genuinely pleased with their finds. I posed for one Target employee who was taking pictures of customers, holding up my two precious boxes with a gleeful grin.

Others looked stressed. "I wanted TWO suitcases! I am shopping for four women and two men!" one woman wailed. Another was chattering nervously on her phone, to someone who clearly expected a better performance from her.

As I browsed the media storage baskets, women across the aisle were scooping up barrettes and make up cases like they'd never seen such things before. I took two baskets for cute bathroom storage and moved on.

Some of the stuff really didn't live up to the hype. The eye masks, while cute, were stiff and scratchy. The handbags looked cheap and bland. This particular store didn't get scarves, so I didn't get to assess those. The hats, housewares, and clothes looked decent.

Since I saw several employees making their way through the crowd with carts of more shoes, I knew a second lap around the store would be in order. That is when I picked up the makeup cases- a large one for me and an smaller one for li'l sis- and the demitasse cups and saucers set that also comes with tiny spoons.

Soooooo, this is my haul: Two pairs of shoes ($29.99 & $39.99), two make up cases ($9.99 & $24.99), two media storage baskets ($7.99 each), and the demitasse set ($39.99).

I did see a few things I considered picking up: a vase, a bedding set, a candle. And I saw some things I really wish I'd been able to grab: a carry on travel bag, some pajama pants, the gorgeous blankets. But ultimately, I knew what I came for, had gotten those things, and picked up enough extras to call it a day.

Plus, there's always tomorrow.

Non-Neutral Coats & Jackets Time

If you don't already have a neutral coat or outdoor jacket, stop right there. Remember neutrals? Black, navy, grey, taupe, tan, chocolate, white, ivory? (Yes, your olive green coat counts; it's a pseudo-neutral.) They go with everything. Yeah, if you don't have one of these STAPLES, you clearly need to stop reading about fun colored coats and run out and get a neutral one. You know, for EVERY DAMN DAY.

Ok, then. Now for those of you who already have neutral outerwear, you are officially ready for one of the most fun parts of fall: selecting a coat in a fun color or print!

Here are some suggestions:

1.A bright solid color, like red or yellow or purple.

This is where I advise you to consider how much you can really afford on a piece that may not stand the test of time. Sure, yellow is hot right now, but next year it probably won't be. So unless you are certain this purchase is one for the ages (you know, like your trusty khaki trench), don't splurge here.

If you truly love red or yellow or purple, you might be able to wear this all season, with everything in your wardrobe. This is what people are talking about when they say something could function as a neutral. Red isn't a neutral color, but for you it could be. (That is not to say you don't also need an ACTUAL neutral in your arsenal, for those of you who should be SHOPPING FOR AN ACTUAL NEUTRAL COAT instead of reading this.)

2. Prints

A little print goes a long way here. Since this is something that goes over the rest of your outfit, choose prints carefully. They should be somewhat neutral (yes, cheetah and zebra prints count) or perhaps a little subdued.

Plaid and hounds tooth are classic prints, and in neutral tones, are just as versatile as a solid neutral piece. So, you might consider investing more in such a piece if you love it and it fits really well.

I am obsessed with this in red, but the print version is a good example of a somewhat subtle pattern, with the neutral background and somewhat graphic flowers. If this print size works for your proportions, it could be a good choice.

3. Color blocking

As hot a color blocking is right now, color blocked coats are surprisingly hard to find. If you love them, keep in mind that this really is a trend, it will pass, and your coat will soon look dated. So don't spend a lot on this.

Here are some way over-priced examples of color blocked coats. Seriously, don't buy any of these. If you happen to find something under $100, go for it.

Handbag of the Day: Aqua Satchel

This is the Happy Guppie Satchel. It's $57.99 at ModCloth. As you may have guessed by the price, it isn't real leather. Good news for those of you who do not like to eat or wear animals. Since I am an eater and wearer of animals, this one isn't for me, but I can appreciate the delicious color and contrasting hardware, adjustable strap, multiple pockets, and adorable scallop details (I just CANNOT get enough scallop details).

Why Fashion's Night Out Is Total BS

Tonight marks the third Fashion's Night Out, an invention of Anna Wintour and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. It's basically a bunch of retail stores collaborating to encourage people to shop- and therefore stimulate the suffering retail sector of the economy.

It's total BS.

I like a party as much as the next girl, and I heart an event that pairs free drinks with sparkly things. Here's the thing, though- this is not really a party. It could be construed as a fundraiser, since some participants are donating some percentage of their profits to charities, but even that isn't the main point of the event.

People, this "party" isn't being thrown for us, the consumers. It's being thrown for the very retailers who invited us. They are celebrating their fervent hope that they will increase full price sales in exchange for a glass of bubbly.

By participating, you are telling Wintour that she was right- if they call it a party, you will come, and you will spend. Even though you know damn well that as desperate as retailers are, there WILL be a sale.

Handbag of the Day: Pleated Box Clutch

I near hyperventilation whenever I see this bag. The size and shape are perfect for every day use, the color is ideal for fall and winter, and the leather is delicious. Plus, it's pretty much an icon in the handbag world. Too bad it's $2k.

Bubble Necklace at The Moma Store

I love how it looks delicate but is also so substantial. And frankly, it will go with everything. But it's $115 and I have several statement necklaces that already don't see the light of day enough.

I am forever on the lookout for feminine, but functional, rain boots, and these are IT. The ribbon detail, slightly contured shaft, and 1 inch stacked heel give them a girly vibe. But they are rubber and vinyl, making them waterproof and therefore useful during the upcoming wet season.

What's the Diff? Necklace v. Earrings Edition

This is the Cute Cut-Out Bird Necklace. It's $10.98 at ASOS.

These are the Trending Topic Earrings. They are $9.99 at ModCloth.

Yeah, more birds, people.

Aside from one hanging from your neck and the other from your ears, they look identical. For the extra 99 cents you'd pay for the necklace, you are getting iron and zinc alloy (yes, inferior to the white gold plated brass and surgical steel posts of the earrings). Although with free shipping, ASOS might actually win in the price department.

So which would I pick? I'd pick the earrings because they are higher quality for a lower price. But since my ears aren't pierced (a long sordid tale you don't want to hear), it's moot.

Handbag of the Day: Pewter Shoulder Bag

This is the Elliott Lucca Cordoba shoulder bag in dark pewter. It's $98. I like the ladylike chain detail and shape. The metallic sheen is subtle and the color is neutral, so this would work with any other color. The strap is removable, so this could be carried as a clutch as well as a shoulder bag. And the turn lock hardware is a nice finishing touch. For all of that, this is an especially great leather bag for under $100.

What's the Diff? Bandaged stripes

This is the Layered Column Dress. It's $178 at Anthro.

This is the Sea Span Skirt. It's $59.99 at ModCloth.

It's obvious that one is a dress and the other is a skirt. And yes, one it black and one is deep blue. But unless you want the bandage strip look all over, the skirt is a very similar (and well-priced) alternative. Personally, I love the dress and all the reviews make it sound like it's universally flattering. ModCloth pieces, on the other hand, do not often fit me, since I am neither a junior size nor a size 0-4 in women's clothes. But if you can pull off the ModCloth stuff, it's a great option if you don't want too much of a good thing.

I grew up in Florida, and then moved to LA, so boots were never a significant part of my shoe collection. (Read: Not a single pair!) This was also convenient, since in addition to size 10 feet, I have huge calves. (Read: NOT cankles, just large, shapely calves that have become the bane of my existence…) So when I moved to Chicago, and could legitimately wear my all-time favorite outfit combo of a dress/skirt, sweater, tights, and boots, I was REALLY excited.

Until I actually tried to buy some.

Much like every other fashionable item, boots tend to be designed for very tall, very skinny women who neither have fat nor muscle, and who would probably be blown away in Chicago wind. Shockingly, I am not designed like that. But Ellen is not one to accept the fashion industry’s BS, so she shopped online and I went from store to store feeling bad about myself, and eventually I found some semi-acceptable boots as well as one really great pair from a Canadian company being sold at Clark’s. (I know it sounds old lady, but Clarks has some really great shoes!)

Even when I finally found some, I did not have any idea that a pair of tall black boots that look good with my skirts and sweaters would not be appropriate for a Chicago…but that is a whole different story.

So for 3 years (which here is synonymous with three winters), I made due with a variety of snow boots/shoes/buckets and this one pair of admittedly fantastic, but now quite boring, black boots with a 1.5 inch heel, squarish toe, and no fun buckles. The cobbler loves me. My coworkers were less than impressed. I am beyond over them.

This year, I was pretty resigned to taking my boots to the cobbler, again, and avoiding the boot ordeal for another year. It’s so demoralizing. And the looks on the shoe salespeople faces are just maddening. But I took my friend Stephanie shopping at perennial favorite Nordstrom (another blog post to come! WOOT), and at the end of our very successful day, we went to the shoe department.

Folks, what you are about to read brings tears of joy to my eyes even now: I tried on TWO pairs of fantastic boots- tall, luscious leather boots- and THEY FIT. It is not because my fantastic trainer found a way to make my calves smaller, either. According to the reviews of the Sofft and Enzo boots I found, they are “huge” and people are “swimming in them”. I laugh at your problems, ye of twiggy legs!

Friends, meet my soon to be new boots:

Not only can I wear these both to work, with jeans, with skirts and dresses, and with nothing at all- they are high quality, fun, and comfortable. They still won’t work in a blizzaster (see: Northface boots for the winter win!), but they will carry me through 8 months of darkness in style. You can all be jealous now.

May I make some suggestions for my fellow boot lovers, before I go on my boot purchasing spree?

1. f you live in a warm climate, don’t act like you live in the arctic- boots with fur and intense winter features just look ridiculous. (Note: After living in LA, I have developed an intense aversion to Uggs. Uggs are not boots. They are fuggly slippers. I WILL judge you. I will not feel bad.)

2. Flat boots are best for a starter pair, or a low heel. No one likes to see a wobbly chick in stiletto boots. Also, what is the point of those?! Just wear a pair of heels.

3. Cowboy boots= weekend boots. NOT for work. Also, watch where you go- those pointy toes hurt.

4. Animal lover or no, real leather rules. They last longer, look nicer, and wear better. I’m sure Ellen can hook you up with some faux-leather alternatives, if you must.

5. You get what you pay for, most of the time. I definitely understand not wanting to invest $200+ on a pair of boots if you live somewhere with the normal THREE months of winter. But if you live in winter, it’s worth it. Save up, buy them, and don’t feel guilty. Price per wear, right!?

6. Beware the super trendy boot. Just sayin.

7. Beware the leg cutters. And by this I mean a boot that is a bad height for you. Ellen has shown some great options. But don’t get boots that make your legs look stumpy.

8. Take care of your boots!!! I should do this more, but its still true. Love your boots and they will love you.

Let this be a tale of hope and inspiration, no matter what climate you live in or what size you are. There are boots out there for every calf size, twiggy to gargantuan. Websites abound with options (widewidths.com, Clark’s, etc), and there’s always Ellen.

Trust me, getting genuine leather at this price is a coup, but it's not impossible. Don't waste your time with faux/pleather/man-made/vegan if you can get the real deal.

Somewhat masculine, on trend, and look comfy.

For so much suede (typically impractical in inclement weather) these look pretty durable with the lug sole and sturdy construction. I'd have them weather treated. Several other colors available.

These are a perfect, unadorned take on the riding boot. The shape is similar to many (much more expensive) Frye boots. Also comes in cognac.

Booties For Your Perusal

People, we can't ignore booties during Boots Week.

If you haven't tried them, do it already. They are a fantastic alternative to pumps or flats when the weather sucks, and can be used when taller boots are just too warm or too much for an outfit.

Some suggestions:

1. Maximize versatility by choosing a pair you'd consider wearing with dresses and skirts, as well as pants. They are especially leg-lengthening when paired with tights in the same color.

(Sure, she'd look great in a burlap sack, but you get the idea.)

2. If you have skinny legs and ankles, try some with a fairly narrow leg opening or you may look like you are playing dress up in someone else's too-big clothes. Typically, the higher it hits on you leg, the more narrow the opening.

3. If you have larger legs and ankles- and even if you have the dreaded cankles!- you CAN wear these. Try some with a wider leg opening and details that draw the eye down, creating the illusion of a longer leg. Otherwise, your leg line will be cut off and you will appear shorter and possibly stumpy. Typically, the lower it hits you on the foot, the wider the opening.

Second Hand Fabulousness: A Tory to Remember

I am not a fan of thrift stores and second hand shopping. The smell grosses me out, pre-worn clothes skeeve me out...Call me a snob or lazy or whatever you want- its just not my thing. Also, I almost never find anything that fits me, so I get frustrated and shopping becomes unpleasant. Not cool.

But I have several friends who LOVE buying second hand clothes, and admittedly I get jealous of their finds from time to time. However, when they find really fantastic designers or vintage pieces that are spectacular, they often don't realize it. And let's be honest- that is a damn shame!

My friend Katherine is one of my best friends- she has a great sense of personal style and understands what fits her body type. Katherine is also one of the people I'm referring to above- she finds fantastic used/vintage clothes and often doesn't realize the level of awesomeness she has purchased for a low, low price. For example: We decided to volunteer at some ridiculous eco-friendly beer festival (for the free beer, obviously), and since there was little for us to do, we did what came most naturally to us- we ate cake balls and went shopping! Luckily, we found both a fantastic bakery and a fantastic designer consignment shop. I pulled a huge pile of dresses for her, and off we went to the dressing room.

Katherine is quite curvy, and wasn't having a lot of luck until...The Tory. This gorgeous Tory Burch dress fits like a glove, and is really funky. I almost died- both from excitement and jealousy. But Katherine didn't know about Tory Burch, and might not have realized what a steal she was getting for $105! Why am I not a perfect, curvy size 8-10?! Needless to say, of course she purchased the dress, and found a store to which we will be returning quite soon!

Of course, the moral of the story is that I'm going to try harder to love second hand stores, and I will be accompanying Miss Katherine on her field trips...if for no other reason than to give fashion designers the credit they deserve!

Fall = boots. It's just simple math, people. I love boots of all flavors, but I especially love knee-high boots.

This is the pair I chose this season:

I got them in natural (not the brown shown here), which looks more like a beat up, worn in grey in person than in the online pic. I was going for something rugged to wear with dresses in the fall and dresses with tights in the winter. I think I scored here, since I found exactly what I wanted and had enough Nordstrom Notes to pay less than $80 for them.

Unless you live in a cave, you have noticed the 70s having another round in fashion.

I have been supportive of flares (they balance out your hips and elongate your legs!), flowy blouses (concealed muffin top, check!), and even the giggle-inducing pussy bow blouses (which also had a moment in the 80s).

But when I walked into my beloved Nordstrom shoe department and saw this:

I was DONE.

They have a 2 inch concealed platform, a huge, chunky heel, and uppers from hell:

Pretty sure Elton John has several pairs of these.

A salesman approaches me and asks "How are you today?" insincerely.

"I'd be better if I wasn't ACTUALLY IN 1974." I ~~scream~~ ~~gnash~~ respond politely.

He informs me that they sell "really well" to women of "all ages" and "they look better on the foot."

Right. Because any self-respecting woman would try these on:

Um. I just realized why clowns scare me.

Nearby, one woman posited that drag queens would be all over these, but they must be the only ones. "Phew," I'm thinking. "I get the costume angle." Her friend reported that biological women all over NYC are wearing them, unfortunately.

Nordstrom Buyers, I hope you are cringing. You are purveyors of taste, not just what sells. Either you don't care or your taste has taken a guttural plunge. Either way, you should be embarrassed.

Handbag of the Day: Mini Saddle Bag

This is the Tarnish Rustic Mini Saddle Bag. It's $128. This bag is small and demure in size, but also has some tougher, more masculine features to keep it from being truly sweet. It's certainly equestrian-inspired, with it's tarnished hardware and heavy leather straps. This would work well with a lot of fall and winter basics as well as the flirty, feminine pieces from spring and summer. For many, this will be an ideal all-season bag, especially since it isn't very big. It comes in 2 other colors, but this olive one is my favorite.

Fall Tights: Let's Review

This is ground we have covered before, people. If you got it the first time, bully. If you didn't, don't sweat it- it's review time.

1. Tights are not pants. If this is unclear to you, please read Oops, I forgot my PANTS.

2. Tights CAN be worn with close-toed flats. Keep in mind that one continuous color (i.e., black tights + black flats) keeps your look streamlined while contrasting colors (i.e., purple tights + black flats) is fun, but less polished, and possibly a little juvenile. For this reason, I suggest reserving non-neutral tights + flats for weekends and evenings, but every office is different.

Exhibit A:

3. Tights can be worn with peep-toed heels. Notice I did not say OPEN toed or sandals. There's a difference, people.

NO:

Not only are her tights sagging (gross), this is a sandal. Sandals and tights should not meet. You will see people trying to "rock the look" or "mix the seasons." They're doing it wrong.

Also NO:

This is an open-toed shoe. And a sandal.

YES:

This is a peep toe. And this outfit combines an element from one season (lighter colored shoes for summer) with heavier textures and fabrics from another (ribbed mustard tights and a tweed skirt for fall), demonstrating a great way to mix seasons.

4. Matching non-neutral colored tights with shoes is a great way to add color to your wardrobe, and can be just as flattering as black on black. This may not be appropriate in more conservative office environments.

5. Patterned tights fall into two categories for me: normal and bat shit crazy.

Normal: subtle pattern, slightly contrasting colors, or small section of high contrast

Bat shit crazy: tie dye, anything that references mimes, the Wicked Witch of the West or makes you look like something is growing on you

6. Boots are not a cure all.

Some of you are thinking, yeah, whatever, I'll just wear tall boots and only part of the crazy pattern with show. That'll tone it down!

You know who you are.

Boots can help tone things down, but the reality is that if they tights aren't appropriate without the boots, they aren't going to magically become appropriate with them.

The $41,000 Handbag

No, I did not add any extra zeros for effect. Forty one. Thousand. Dollars.

Prada makes this bag. Out of crocodile skin. NOT the tears of 1000 blessed virgins, as you'd expect. Or even the remaining hairs of balding Tibetan monks who devote their lives to crafting handbags for the super wealthy to sling around like it's a $19.99 special from Target.

No, no. Crocodile. You know, that fugly animal who eats birds and small children when given the opportunity? Yeah, that.

So, I get that real skins are pricy to obtain and probably hard to work with. But this handbag looks like pretty much every other black croc-embossed leather bag in the world. For $41k, I want unique. Oh, and I want DIAMONDS and a daily massage.

But, you're saying, the price per wear is so low! I'll use it for 10 years!

First, no you won't. If you can afford $41k handbags, you can afford variety.

Second, if you wanted to get your price per wear under $10 (which isn't that impressive BTW) , you'd have to carry it every damn day for over 10 years. (That's right, I can do math.)

But don't worry, the Prada isn't even the most expensive one available. Apparently, this mink and cotton number from Fendi can be as high as $44,000.

Mink and cotton. Mink and...cotton. Does that sound a little weird to you? Maybe even a little BIZZARE AS HELL?

Yes, yes- mink is expensive, blah blah. Cotton...not so much. So if you've combined my overpriced furry animal skin with a common (read: low) natural fiber. I expect a commesurate price reduction. How does subtracting $42,0000 sound?

Also, I doubt the shoes in that pic come with the bag, but even if they did, would you really be ahead? They will make you look like you stepped in, and are now dragging around, roadkill.

I am not going to disclose the most I have paid for a handbag. But I will tell you that if I carried it every day for 10 years, my price per wear would be less than 20 cents.

This is the Fossil Vintage Reissue Clutch. It is $148. And it just screams I-wish-I-was-on-safari and Where The Hell Is My Camel Trench And Fedora, no?

It's fabulous, people. Most of Fossil's vintage reissues are pretty fly, actually, but this one is particularly alluring. It's huge, at 9" x 13.25", and it will work as a neutral bag with pretty much anything except another busy print. The cheetah print is calf hair, giving it some luxury. Love.

A Retail Score of Epic Proportions

People, I am not a good second-hand shopper. I rarely have the patience to paw through bins of leftovers and racks of crap. I don't want my clothes to smell musty. My gag reflex is easily triggered. And I don't like the idea of so much polyester in one place.

BUT..

My friend Friday is on a mission to go an entire year buying only second-hand and thrifted clothes to decrease her carbon footprint. While admirable, this isn't something I could do. For one thing, it's nearly impossible (in my admittedly limited experience) to find something very specific. If you are suit shopping or trying to find the perfect black pencil skirt second hand, good luck.

But if you are just browsing,you could find yourself part of the biggest retail score of the year.

Ever since I saw these shoes on the feet of Dr. Elliot Reed in Scrubs, I have been lusting after- and searching for- them:

That was in 2008.

I orginally couldn't figure out who made them, so when I stumbed upon the orange version:

...I found out they were Marc by Marc Jacobs. And they were $500.

Periodically, I searched for them on sale. But as time went by, they were no longer available. So, I put them on the list of The Ones That Got Away.

Cut to Friday and I at a random consignment store in SF, where everything was clean, nothing smelled musty, and high end designer clothes and shoes and bags were everywhere I looked.

Being shoe ~~obsessed~~ ~~fanatical~~ curious, I tend to scan the shoe selections in such places first. As we moved toward the back of the store, I hear "THOSE are FABULOUS."

I look down.

I spot them. I garble something about how OMG-I-have-been-looking-for-those-for-years and OMG-they-are-amazing.

I pick them up and hold my breath. I turn them over.

They are my size.

And they are $69. They were mine before I even hit the cash register.

People, this is a coup. One that won't likely be repeated for a long, long time.

I doubt I will ever be a second-hand shopping expert. But I will remember the thrill of that score forever, which might make it easier the next time I venture into a thrift store. And obviously I will be returning to that one.

I follow you on Twitter and often click your links to see who wore what to which event no one else knows about and which nail colors are hot that week/day/hour. I appreciate the up-to-the-minute coverage of unattainable celebrity looks and overpriced skincare products. You particularly excel in convincing me, while I stand in line at the grocery store, that I simply must have your latest print issue, even though I know that 100% of its content is available- for free- online. With your colorful, glossy covers promising me better skin in an hour and that I will look more stylish in 30 seconds, I cannot help but succumb to your pages.

However, yesterday you posted a link to an article called "Vampire Girlfriends: Are You Like Bella, Elena, Sookie, or Buffy?"

So, um. This is not a thing. Which Vampire Girlfriend I am, that is. It's not comparable to asking whether people have a classic, romantic, or edgy style, or whether we think Karl Lagerfeld has had botox. It's just...not a thing.

Aside from the fact that I don't know who any of those chicks are (except Buffy, obviously), I am ~~grossed out~~ ~~horrified~~ a little concerned that you are telling women that they'd be good at being some vampire dude's gf. Even if vampires existed (see: not a thing, above), they suck blood. You know, to stay alive or powerful or whatever. So that's gross. And vaguely immoral. And probably illegal. Thus, a woman aspiring to date such a dude in real life, or even find out which such weirdo she'd be most compatible with, is disturbing. Like Seek-Professional-Help disturbing, not I-Still-Like-Hello-Kitty disturbing.

And you are not only encouraging such weirdness, you are tweeting it to all 2,021,019 (at last count) of your followers.

I read your magazine and site for its content on clothes, makeup, and which celebrity wore some fugly dress better. Not for strange, off the wall topics like this one.

Stick to what you do best, please. All 2 million+ of us will thank you.

It's been a long time since I posted about the items every woman absolutely must have in her closet. Most lists are boring as hell and hardly capture the diversity of women and their needs. Since most of these "must have" lists bug me, I usually create my own.

InStyle's latest list doesn't bug me, however. It's actually updated for this year! And it includes animal print! And there's no white button down! I recommend checking it out.

For the first time, I can get on board with 9 out of 10 items on such a list. The one I disagree with? An oversize watch.

Accessories, as I keep repeating OVER AND OVER, should be proportional to the person wearing them. So, if you are a tiny person, have tiny wrists, or your frame generally gets overwhelmed by large peices, an oversize watch won't do you any favors.

I can get away with huge necklaces because of my stature, but because I have small wrists, large peices there just look silly.

Ladies, read these lists with a skeptical eye. Be open-minded about trying new things, but if something doesn't work, move on.

I have always been a proponent of the phrase "Change your shoes, change your life." Not the deepest sentiment of all time, but one that makes sense. Sometimes just changing one little thing can make everything seem so much better. It follows (to me, anyway) that if you change your shoe STORAGE, you could change your life, too. And damn, people, did I need it.

But my long wait is over! I have a custom closet, complete with fabulous shoe storage.

People, I think I just found my crossbody for Disney. (What, I didn't mention I am going to Disneyland during the hottest part of the summer with 4 kids (not mine!) and 3 other adults?)

It is $98, which is pretty good for such a sweet little leather number. It looks perfect for staying hands free all day while being able to tote around a phone, cash, hand sanitizer, and a spare diaper (for the kids, wiseguy). Sleeker Versions of Your Comfy Clothes

You CAN look put together in casual clothes. A lot has to do with fit and pieces with just enough tailoring to give some shape and structure to your outfits.

Don't gripe to me about cost, either. I get that you don't necessarily want to spend a fortune on your casual-wear. Everything I am showing in this post is from Old Navy, except the accessories.

1. Swap your faded denim with elastic waistbands (you know who you are!) for more structured jeans in a darker wash. They are just are comfortable as other jeans, but they look infinitely more polished.

Instead of these:

(Don't do this to yourself; even supermodels look weird in pleated denim and unless you are over 5'9", capris are NOT your friend.)

2. Replace cut off or rolled up shorts (both look juvenile and messy) for finished, hemmed ones. (The above rule for jeans applies to denim shorts, too.)

3. While you are at it, get rid of the ones that ride up (hello, inappropriate) and get some longer length shorts.

Leopard Print Flats Roundup

Last year, I did a zebra print flats round up. This year, I can't go into a shoe store or browse a shoe site without tripping over several pairs of leopard print flats. For those of you who shy away from animal print, leopard print (on shoes) has several advantages over others: First, they are truly neutral, with shades of brown and black, and often taupe and grey. Second, they can read playful but are also (mostly) office-appropriate.

The best rule regarding animal print is to use it sparingly in an outfit. To keep the look polished and sophisticated, you may also want to stick with naturally-occurring color patterns- and natural materials- instead of more difficult to wear options, like pink faux patent snake print or blue faux suede zebra print.

As it turns out, I personally prefer my leopard print shoes to be made of hair (faux or real) with a pointed toe.

...so sayeth my snarky li'l sis. And she is right.

Because where I live now? Is HOT. Not warm, not balmy, not yay-I-don't-need-a-jacket. HOT. AS BALLS.

Enter: The Great Shorts Debate.

Since leaving Florida, I have been a staunch Shorts Opponent. They are flattering on few, can be replaced with a skirt or dress easily, they look like you are on safari, blah blah blah. Li'l sis, also a Shorts Opponent, understands the issue and flatly refuses to wear them, even in the Chicago summer. Speaking of hot.

But it's hot here. And I running errands and unpacking and wandering around the garden and breaking down boxes. I have been doing all of these things in a dress. And that just isn't practical or decent, considering I almost flashed the Comcast guys like 8 times yesterday.

So, I found myself reaching for shorts this AM. I scrounged up an old school pair- faded navy blue from Banana. They look exactly how I expected them to look: hideous, bland, and suburban soccer mom (apologies to actual soccer moms who are much more stylish than the world gives you credit for).

The shorts landscape has changed, however. If you have eyes, you have seen them all over the place, in more cuts and patterns than ever before. You have seen shorts with tights and boots (still HATING IT). You have seen sweet little lacy numbers. You have seen scalloped edges. With all of this variety, couldn't I find at ONE acceptable pair?

The short (ha!) answer is yes. I won't bore you with the details of the extensive searching I have done, and continue today. These are what I ordered today from Anthro, with hopes high that I might find 1 or 2 pairs elsewhere to round out a summer collection:

What's the diff besides the colors? Well, the Coco mat is made from 100% natural coir fiber and the Wal-Mart version...is, too. They are both 18"x30". Both have a non-slip backing. Soooo, it looks like aside from the aesthetics, they are pretty damn similar.

Except that, for an extra $15.02 + shipping, I don't have to support Wal-Mart. And that's enough for me!

No, Moving is Not an Excuse to Look Crazy

Moving day is fast approaching. Up to this point, S and I have been bringing over the smaller, breakable stuff on our own. Which means multiple trips up and down the stairs, across the bay, and into the new place. And so I have to contemplate what to wear for each day of moving, all while knowing I could run into new neighbors at any time.

Here are a few things I keep in mind when moving:

1. Sleeveless is my friend. Just because it's cool in one place doesn't mean it's not hot as hell in the other.

2. Ditto dark jeans. After pulling, pushing, and dragging two 8x11 rugs up from the backyard and into the new house (which includes some stairs), I no longer believe my light wash trouser jeans were my best choice.

3. Not my friend? Low rise jeans. Too much bending down to ensure I'm not flashing a neighbor at all times.

4. Ditto my giant handbag. I love her, but damn, she's annoying to carry everywhere when my hands are full of 20 other things.

5. Since I refuse to wear sneakers when not deliberately exercising, flats are a no-brainer. Have you ever tried to haul stuff in (even very low) wedges? Don't.

6. Make up isn't even kind of an option when I am all gross, so I can at least have my hair not look insane. It takes less time (for me, at least) to deal with my hair than make up, anyway.

7. No jewelry that could even possibly get in the way! I learned this the hard way by wearing a giant cocktail ring while trying to drag a rug in. Never. Again.

June Shopping Ban

My May Shopping Ban was a success! Not only did I BARELY cheat (for the -too-good-to-pass-up Kate Spade wallet; for 3 pink tees from Old Navy for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day; and a sweet little belt for $15.50), but I started to think a lot more rationally about what I was buying and why. Before I added anything to my virtual cart, I was forced to stop and think. Which apparently I wasn't doing much before.

And no, I am not counting my Stella & Dot jewelry because I earned all my pieces for free by hosting a trunk show and the two things I did purchase were for someone else.

Because the May ban was such a success for me, I am continuing the ban in June. Same rules, one guilt-free cheat item. This time, I most likely will actually get the red patent leather pointy toed flats I have been eyeing.

My clothes/shoes/bags/jewelry shopping ban is in part because I am trying to cut back my unnecessary spending and be more conscientious about what I buy, but also because I am officially a homeowner now. And yes, I want to buy house stuff. Lots of it. I hope you'll pardon me when a decorating item or six sneaks into my posts now and then, like the What's The Diff post from yesterday...

This is the Plenty of Spice to Share Shaker Set. It's $21.99 at ModCloth (currently sold out but you can sign up to be notified when it's back in stock).

What's the diff? Well, the shakers in the PB set are ceramic and the tree is cast-metal. The ModCloth version is all ceramic. The price is so similar, I'd say go with the one you prefer aesthetically. For me, I'd go with the PB set. Not only does it look higher end, based on what I know of the products from each site, PB products are better made and last longer.

Size Banana

[Disclaimer: if you don't understand the words "farce", "humor", or "sarcasm", stop reading now.]

I was talking with my friend S today about how certain brands seems to have size inflation. Yes, like grade inflation. Vanity sizing is abundant and making things even more confusing for women to buy clothes.

The Gap is one of the worst offenders- a size 4 pant fits what is a more standard size 8 body and then stretches, eventually fitting more like a 10 or 12. WTF?

This makes buying clothes online particularly crap-shootastic. And I am sick of it.

The conversation/ranting/chest pounding about numbered sizes not being standard has been had. But no real solutions have been offered. Women are offended by what certain numbers seem to imply and the clothing industry has made ZERO effort to standardize anyway. Even jeans, which you'd think would be easier given the standard waist sizes, aren't easy to buy.

My solution? Introducing the new Fruit & Animal Sizing System (FASS).

Why not start with something women have been conditioned to identify with? Most women know whether they're considered an apple or pear, a sexy panther or a fluffy bunny. Surely going further couldn't possibly be more damaging- and won't be nearly as confusing.

And it's just as random as the numbers.

Pygmy Hippo: formerly size "small". Can't be offensive because if you are that skinny, who cares what animal you are? You obviously have no body issues because being skinny makes everyone happy.

Banana: formerly a size "medium". Inoffensive because who doesn't like bananas? Implies that you are curvy, but in a slim, carrying your own wrap kind of way. And yellow is so cheerful.

Apple: formerly a "figure flattering shape". Meant to conceal your tummy and emphasizes the waist. Apples are healthy and contain more vitamin C than oranges. Take that, citrus.

Orangutan A, B and C: formerly European sizes "1, 2, and 3". These clothes are meant for people that everyone knows are skinnier than them anyway.

Pear: formerly a "curvy on the bottom shape." Typically used for bathing suit and pant shopping, now this size spans the gamut from tunics to flip flips. Because you will obviously need some support for that itty bitty waist and round thing in your face.

Snow Leopard: formerly size "large." Everyone knows snow leopards are strong and powerful. Can't catch a goat on the side of a mountain if you are the size of a pygmy hippo.

Turtle: formerly "plus sizes". Inoffensive because it's obvious that you want to hide your curves under oversized polyester tunics and baggy jeans and don't want any of the same options that Pygmy hippos, bananas, or Snow Leopards have.

Watermelon: formerly "petite sizes". Because you are just so short and cute and hopefully seedless.

Please note the FASS is an evolving system. With time, I hope to encapsulate every possible shape and size so that buying clothes is not only easier, but way more fun. And obviously less confusing than numbered waist/inseam/rise measurements could ever be.

Challenge #3 hit just as I was smirking at yesterday's success. The Anthro tag sale was disappointing, at best, so I was able to turn my nose up and walk away from it without glancing back.

But just as I was set to ignore the smell of commerce wafting though my computer screen, the Kate Spade sample sale was announced. Via email, Facebook, and Twitter. (on To Do List: familiarize myself with unsubscribe feature.)

Up to 75% off and $5 shipping? Who was I to resist? Seriously people, WHO?

Especially since this baby was only $89 (marked down from $225):

So, I caved and got it in a delightful shade of yellow called goldenrod. Can you blame me?

The question on everyone's mind is now, of course, whether this is my May cheat item or if the Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats will also make it into my cart before the month is up.

May Shopping Ban: Challenge #2

The lure of a sale. Not just any sale, but a mega sale. Like the Nordstrom half yearly sale, for which I may or may not have taken mornings off from work to attend during the week when stock is still high and customer traffic low.

Or the upcoming, semi-annual Anthropologie Tag Sale tomorrow, May 17. Their biggest sale. With huge mark downs on a huge number of items.

This is like crack for an Anthro addict like me. The key to overcoming this challenge will be to avoid it entirely, or to have ONE item selected as my cheat item, so if I find it on a great discount, I can snap it up (relatively) guilt-free.

Whether I can stick to the May Shopping Ban is one thing. What I have started realizing about my shopping habits is another- and much more thought-provoking- thing entirely.

The Hunt for Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats: Another Possibility

Since I know you have been anxiously awaiting an update on The Hunt for Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats, here it is: another contender has thrown its ~~hat~~ pointy toed goodness into the ~~ring~~ shopping cart.

This is the Nine West Naughty Leather flat. They are $49.95, making them the cheapest option so far. The deep red is lovely. They also have the best pointed toe I have seen in some time; not too long with a hint of curve, making it less severe than other pointy toed shoes.

I have some reservations, however. They appear shiny, but not patent. Deal-breaker? Possibly. Dull red is not for me. I also have a hit-or-miss history with how Nine West shoes fit, particularly their flats. Given the good reviews and free shipping, they could be worth a try, though.

In an attempt to be a TEENY TINY bit less intolerant of things I hate on first glance, I perused the website for more information. The Hunt for Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats: Contenders

So far, there are 2 contenders for my next pair of Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats. Frankly, I am relieved that there are any at all.

First up: Kate Spade New York Elaina

They are the prefect shade of red, a great non-witchy pointy toe, and are flat enough (they have a 1/2 heel, which I can probably get over). They have a feminine, almost delicate vibe enhanced by the neat little bow. They are also $225.

Next up: Fitzwell Vanessa III

These are also a fabulous shade of red, have a (most likely) non-witchy pointy toe, and are also flat enough with their 1/2 heel. These have a more adult, retro feel with the higher curved sided and deeper hue. They aren't made of real leather, which is a big hit against them. Then again, they are only $59.

May Shopping Ban: Challenge #1

My first real challenge happened yesterday when I went to Anthropologie. Fortunately, I was with a friend who is also, at least somewhat, on a self-imposed shopping ban, so we could browse together without encouraging any purchases by the other.

Why even go in, you ask?

I like keeping up with what's new, seeing what's out there, comparison shopping, and generally looking at pretty things. Shopping is not just a means to an end for me. It's an experience, a hobby. It's not my only hobby, fortunately, but it is one of them.

So, we went in, poked around, played with some new housewares, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

I did have a moment of panic when this awesome maxi dress (see it on The British Anthropologist here) was marked down a second time to $39.99 (original retail price was $158).

An excerpt of my racing mind:
OMG! $40! How can I pass that up? It doesn't count if it's a steal, right? RIGHT?! And I can wear it all summer! And it's in classic colors! RIGHT?!

Fortunately, they didn't have my size. Which was, weirdly, a relief. I wasn't even faced with a real choice, so I could walk away guilt-free.

And I learned a few things.

While nice leather, are so boring in person, I fell asleep holding them.

Most importantly, I walked out empty handed without feeling like I was missing something. A small thing, maybe, but certainly a success.

May Shopping Ban: Day 1 and The Red Flats Story

It's Day 1 of my shopping ban and while I feel a little shaky, I am going strong. This whole Not Buying Anything Thing is rough, given that Kate Spade's new summer pieces are out, Anthro keeps running huge sales, and Piperlime continues upping the ante with summer dresses under $75.

But lo! There is an out! A cheat item is permitted. Phew.

My cheat item will likely be a pair of red flats. My specifications for these flats are: bright lipstick red (nothing orange, dull, or pinkish), patent leather, pointy toed, and completely flat (no sliver wedge, no kitten heel). They are going to replace the pair I currently have, which have been much loved (read: worn out and starting to stink). I have an emotional commitment to these shoes like no other pair of shoes (except maybe the boots I bought in Amsterdam with S, but that's another story for another day).

My Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flat love story begins innocently enough with a pair of such red flats at a Macy's sale. I don't remember the brand (Calvin Klein? Micheal Kors?), but I distinctly remember trying them on in front of those awful shoe sale racks set up all over the massive shoe department. They were comfortable, delightfully pointy, and the perfect shade of red. They were attractive and even a little sexy, which is hard to accomplish without a heel. They were also out of my price range, even on sale. I was between law school and my first full time real job and while these were perfect, they couldn't be mine.

I knew leaving them was a mistake, but I couldn't do anything about it. And I regretted choosing rent and food over those shoes for years. YEARS, PEOPLE. For years, I kicked myself for letting them go. For years, I searched for them or their equal.

Zilch.

Until! I spotted them. Unassuming, they sat upon a shelf at Bandolino. I tried them on immediately, and purchased them on the spot. They were exactly what I wanted: bright tomato red, shiny patent, razor-sharp pointed toe that wasn't too long, a low vamp that showed just a little toe cleavage, and perfectly flat. They were also a d'Orsay flat, so they had just a little more sex appeal than your average flat shoe. Not only could I afford them, they were on sale and less expensive than the ones at Macy's.

The Bandolino flats (once I broke them in- ouch!), were my favorite flats for at least 3 years. I received compliments on them almost any time I wore them, and I wore them often. They were great for work, parties, casual weekends. Loved, loved, LOVED them.

They had to be sent to shoe heaven when they were scuffed beyond repair and holes were worn into the toes. No amount of attention from the cobbler could save them.

About 2 years into my relationship with the Bandolino flats, I foresaw my future without them and I panicked. What if it took me years (YEARS, PEOPLE) to find a replacement pair?

A Nordstrom sale and yearing to stall the inevitable led me to the BCBG MAXAZRIA (I'm not yelling, that's how they write it) red flats I have now. I didn't touch them until the Bandolino flats bit the dust. Only then did I start wearing them.

The BCBGs felt different, of course. Like any new lover, their touch was foreign and appearance novel. Instead of a d'Orsay cut out, they had a buckle with gold details. Rather than a flat, shiny patent, they had a bit more sparkle and sheen. They were a slightly deeper hue.

So as I mourned my beloved Bandolinos, I adjusted to the BCBGs. And slowly, little by little, I grew to love and appreciate them. They could also be worn to work and parties and on casual weekends. They too garnered compliments, though not nearly as many as their predecessors.

Now my BCBG flats are starting to scuff, and wear down, and smell. And so I must commence the search, once more, for a pair of Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats before the end of the BCBG flats' life.

This leads me to my current quest: The Hunt for Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats. My mission is clear. I must locate and secure my next pair of Red Patent Leather Pointy Toed Flats. And maybe this time, I will buy multiples.

May Shopping Ban

I just signed up for The Anthroholic Shopping Ban/Shop Your Closet Challenge. The rules require participants to not buy any clothes, shoes, or accessories for the rest of May. Under the terms of the ban, we are allowed one cheat item. Since I am searching for red patent leather pointy-toed flats to replace the (stinky and well-worn) ones I have now, those will likely be my cheat item if I find the right pair.

I have participated in clothes-wearing challenges like Dressember and Frocking Fridays, but I have never taken a true shopping hiatus.

Shop This Place: Darlingtonia Moccasin Company

Moccasins aren't my go to shoes. To me, most of them feel a little masculine and nature-y and, weirdly, juvenile at the same time. Because I love feminine details in my accessories, I am more of a ballet flats/booties/round-toed pumps kind of girl. And no, I don't do fringe. But I just bought a pair of black moccasins (with a bow and nautical detailing and zero fringe, obviously) and finding them fun to wear.

So when I stumbled upon Darlingtonia Moccasin Company, I knew I'd hit pay dirt in terms of cute moccasins for the rest of us. Feathers, apples, and stud details make these anything but your ordinary moccasin. They are leather, handmade, and made to order. And for that kind of work, $119 or $129 seems like a reasonable price.

Things That Should Be Exinct: Flesh Belts

Urban Dictionary defines a flesh belt as "The fat roll hanging over a girl's low rider jeans, while wearing a belly shirt."

I am not making a comment on one's possession of belly fat; I happen to have plenty of it myself. But showing your stomach in public is mostly just gross and inappropriate regardless of whether you are sporting six pack abs or not. A flesh belt makes you look like you can't dress yourself because your clothes clearly don't fit. If you look sloppy and not put together, a lot of people are going to assume you are a not-put-together-person generally and treat you accordingly.

And I call bullshit on anyone who claims they "don't care."

Beaches and pools aside, I think most of us can agree that belly buttons aren't the cutest on adults, hmmm?

So imagine my ~~dismay~~ ~~morbid curiosity~~ mild interest when I saw a woman at the gym the other day wearing a REALLY TIGHT tank and EVEN TIGHTER bike shorts, accessorized with her (fairly prominent) flesh belt. Um, she hadn't even starting exercising yet. I was ~~scared of~~ a teeny bit curious about when she started stretching.

First of all, wasn't she cold? And second, can't she just wear a shirt that covers her entire torso? I was worried for her health and her closet.

I get that many people don't want to spend a lot on gym clothes- they aren't supposed to be glamorous or even necessarily that flattering. But they are supposed to cover you and be relatively comfortable. As this woman is a mom (she brought her son in for babysitting while she worked out), she probably doesn't have a ton of time to spend on shopping for herself.

People, I have an inexpensive and convenient solution: the tall section at Old Navy or the Gap.

I buy plain cotton tees from the tall section, rather than the regular section. They fit the same, only they are longer. They are cheap, especially on sale, and there's an Old Navy and/or Gap in almost every town. Even if you don't have one, the internet is for more than just porn, people. Harness it for your gym clothing needs.

Viola! Tummy coverage on the cheap.

Let the flesh belt go extinct. Pretty please. And don't get me started on the (different) woman not wearing a proper sports bra during spin class. I though she was going to put an eye out with those things.

What's the Diff? The Obvious Differences Edition

As you may have heard, I am obsessed with a certain pair of $360 See by Chloe sandals. Here they are in black:

As you may also have heard, I am searching for a cheaper alternative until an extra $360 for season-specific shoes drops in my lap (though I think Nordstrom has them for $345...). After days of meticulously combing my sources, I haven't found much that suits, but I did just stumble upon these:

They also come in bone, giving me a decent alternative for spring and summer. Like the See by Chloes, they have a platform, a slingback with a buckle, and scallop details that look sweet but not over the top frilly. These are obviously not a copy, but they do have a similar vibe. But they lack the chunky heel that I love on the See by Chloe version, and this kind of slingback will slide right off my heel making these cute but impossible (for me) to wear.

So, they aren't the solution to my expensive sandal-craving problem.

But they are getting there, which gives me hope that something else exists, just waiting for my discovery and purchase. Ideally in real leather and under $150, obviously.

What's the Diff? Orange Floral Blouse Edition

This is the Blazing Blouse. It is $98 at Anthropologie.

This is the Theater Company Top. It's $124.99 at ModCloth.

They are both orange floral tops with almost identical color schemes. They are both silk. Anthro's version has slightly bigger flowers and ModCloth's clearly has some contrasting floral details on top. They look damn close to me.

But no, they are obviously not the exact same top. So for an extra $27, I's thinking ModCloth's version must offer SOMEthing extra. Yep, it features this little number on the back:

Whoa. Not awesome. ModCloth calls this little vision of craziness the "knit columns" that "frame" the "edgy, exposed zipper at its back." Um, no.

If I had to choose, I'd go with the Anthro version. They tend to have more women's sizing (versus juniors sizing- hello, do I look 14?!) and I like the simpler, larger print that seems less busy. ModCloth's version has too much going on, like they are trying too hard.

I have been seeing countless pieces with scalloped details. These details are cute and flirty and feminine without (mostly) being too precious. Here are some sweet pieces, which, as a bonus, are under $100 each:

I had these bike shorts/cropped legging things when I was 10. I remember them distinctly, because I loved wearing them with an oversized tee with some sort of wild print, fastened with a plastic clip on the side so the white lace would peek out from underneath. I was def rocking a side ponytail, too. I think I thought I was Madonna.

That was 1989.

And yet, these are SOLD OUT. In 2011.

The word gross doesn't begin to describe what I think of these.

Sure, ModCloth is touting them as underwear, to "save you in case of any unannounced Monroe moments!", but we all know that with the resurgence of 80s fashion (I use that term loosely) and a plethora of idiots, these will be worn as pants or shorts, with all kinds of arse hanging out.

I shudder at the prospective sight. I think we can safely add these to the list of Clothing That Should Never Have Been Created Let Alone Sold, along with scrunchies, Uggs, and Crocs, hmmm?

New Purchase! Kate Moss for Longchamp Clutch

I would be remiss if I didn't share with you my Vegas purchase.

I happened upon my amazing handbag while helping li'l sis select her Longchamp tote for spring and summer. We found it:

But the very first thing I saw when I stepped into the store was this:

This is one of the limited edition designs from Kate Moss for Longchamp. (You can view the entire Neo Patch design collection here.)

This was a gut reaction, people. I saw it and fell hard. The color combo gives it a vaguely 70s vibe, the detailed craftsmanship was evident, and it was in a glass case, like a beacon of richness and sophistication in a sea of bright florals and preppy totes.

(For the record, I'm not knocking the Longchamp classics; I have one myself and love it.)

But it wasn't JUST an impulse purchase. I also considered how I'd use it and with what. It's the perfect size for a clutch, because it will actually hold a phone, lipstick, keys, etc. And I can use it for day or evening. And frankly, it will go with so much of my wardrobe it's not even funny.

And so it came home with me and my Vegas hangover. Now I'm off to take a 10-12 hour nap.

Handbag of the Day: Bryna Nicole

The Bryna Nicole Lock It Up Bay bag is one of the coolest and edgiest (yes, I said it) bags I have ever seen on Piperlime. It's basically the perfect weekend cross body. Distressed leather for a worn in, relaxed, I've-been-carrying-this-around-forever vibe; lock detail that serves no purpose except to look vintage-y and cool; long strap for slinging it over your shoulder to free your hands at brunch/the farmer's market/shoe shopping.

So, I saw these and may or may not have gasped. Out loud.

For me, these are the perfect spring and summer shoe. The color and shape will go with everything from skirts and dresses to shorts and wide leg jeans. They have feminine details (hellooooo cute scallop details!) but are balanced by a substantial platform and heel. And with an adjustable ankle strap, the slingback might not even be a deal breaker.

They are over $300. I am not saying I haven't spend that on shoes. But such expense is usually reserved for longer term, multi-season shoes, like fantastic- but basic- black boots.

A less expensive knock off is an option, should anything suitably similar exist.

The Budget Babe found a fairly similar look for less at Forever 21, at least for the black version:

I appreciate where she is going, but I am not convinced. To me, the F21 version looks agressive, not sweet, and they lack the simplicity that makes the originals so versatile.

Sigh.

So my obsession with the original continues, until I stumble upon an extra $360 to make them mine or I find a suitable alternative.

Spring Wardrobe: Colorful Dresses & How to Wear Them

Bright, vibrant dresses are in and are so much fun. A lot of people are afraid of bright colors because they don't know what to wear them with. Here are a few ways to wear your colorful dresses without freaking out about how to coordinate them with other pieces.

1. Bright dress + neutral shoes + neutral jacket/sweater

This is the easiest way to wear a colorful dress. Start with the dress (this is the Tucker Panel Dress)...

Add shoes (these are the Stuart Weitzman Sashay pumps)...

Throw on your completer piece (this is the Banana Republic Textured Ruffle Jacket)...

Your jewelry, scarves, and belts can be similarly neutral- wooden beads or metallic pieces work well.

2. Bright printed dress + matching bright shoe + neutral jacket/sweater

This is a slightly bolder- and more fun- way to wear color, but it works best with a print. Exact matching of your shoes to your clothes very often looks dated and matronly (or, weird as it seems, juvenile), so to avoid looking dowdy or just ill-informed, don't match your shoes to your solid colored bright dresses. On the other hand, picking up a color in a printed dress is a great way to add even more color to an outfit.

Start with the printed dress (this is another Tucker dress)...

Add shoes (this is the Auri Footwear Layla sandal)...

Throw on the neutral jacket/sweater (this is the Banana Republic Ruffled Military Jacket)...

Jewelry, scarves, and belts can be equally colorful, when done the same way- not matchy, but picking up a color in the print. In this case, I might add something orange, like a cocktail ring, to pick up the orange detail in the dress.

3. Bright dress + contrasting shoe + complimentary jacket/sweater

This is some of the boldest way to wear color, but it doesn't have to be scary. Employ a little color theory and you can wear an even more creative outfit. I do not profess to understand the intricacies of color theory, but knowing a couple of simple ideas could expand your horizons, wardrobe-speaking.

Let's start with the Rachel Pally Goddess Dress in teal (it's only $110 and on my wish list):

Find the dress color on the color wheel: blue-green. Check out the colors on the other half of the color wheel, the same distance from the center: yellow, yellow-orange, orange, etc. Those are your shoe colors.

Add a contrasting shoe (these are from BC Footwear)...

Find the dress color on the color wheel again. Check out the colors next to it, the same distance from the center: blue and green. Those are your completer piece colors.

Throw on a complimentary jacket/sweater (this one is from Old Navy)...

Let's try this with another dress, in a more muted palette:

Start with the dress (this is the Kimchi Blue Flutter Sleeve Dress at Urban)...

Find the color on the color wheel: Pink. Check out the colors opposite it, but which are the same distance from the center: Mint, Powder Blue, Lemon. Those are your shoe colors.

Add shoes (these are Sam Edelman oxfords)...

Find the dress color on the color wheel again. Check out the colors next to it, also the same distance from the center: salmon and lilac/lavender/orchid. Those are your completer piece colors.

Throw on a jacket/sweater (this is the Banana Long Sleeve Open cardi)...

Jewelry, scarves, and belts can be equally colorful or neutral, depending on your comfort level.

Some women put colors together like this instinctively, but relying on tools like the color wheel is a fine way to navigate wearing multiple colors. It's a modern, fun way to put outfits together. And yes, this formula works with prints, as well as solids.

4. Colorful dress + same color, different shade jacket/sweater + neutral shoe

A subtler version of #3, this is a fairly sophisticated take on wearing color, and one I try to use often.

Start with a dress in a color you love (this is the an Ellen Tracy cowl neck knit dress in vibrant red)...

Find the color on the color wheel: red. Check out what is on either side of it, the same distance from the center AND what is in it's section of the "pie": red-violet, red-orange, pink, and maroon. Those are your completer piece colors. In this case, try to stick with tones that match that of the dress (if you are wearing a bold red, find an equally bold pink and keep the pastels for something else).

Add a jacket or sweater (this is the Banana Cashmere Ruffle Edge Cardi)...

Grab some neutral shoes (this is the Nine West Rocha pump in taupe)...

I like neutral accessories with this look, but you can spice things up with some contrasting colors in a similar tone, like cobalt blue or yellow.
